The number of senior adults in the US is rising. Nearly 20% of the population will be 65 or older by 2030.
While folks may incorrectly think chiropractic care is unsafe for the elderly, chiropractic is one of the most frequently utilized types of complementary and alternative care by older adults.
In fact, is used by an estimated 5% of older adults in the U.S. annually. And we think the more people knew about the benefits of chiropractic for seniors, the more seniors would take advantage of it!
As we age, dramatic changes occur in the spine. As we age, spinal discs, facet joints, ligaments, muscles and other spinal tissues become weaker, less hydrated, more fibrotic, and less able to withstand normal stresses.
Chiropractic for seniors is also important for maintaining balance and coordination to help to minimize the risk of falls. Studies have shown that chiropractic care can help restore balance and coordination by stimulating the joint receptors (mechanoreceptors) in the cervical spine. This stimulation is thought to restore or normalize joint receptor functioning which leads to improvements in balance and coordination.
Many seniors struggle to move in the way they once did and suffer from a decreased range of motion. Chiropractic care can improve range of motion in the neck and spine as well as the extremities, making everyday tasks such as brushing teeth or putting away dishes easier.
