Are you ready for this? We’re about to tell you to eat chocolate and blueberries and to drink coffee to help reduce your stress.
Everyone knows stress takes a tremendous toll on the body. In fact, many of the patients we see on a regular basis have back pain that has been exacerbated by the stress in their lives.
Everyone also knows that stress can be alleviated in numerous ways from exercise to meditation. But did you know you can also control stress by what you eat?
Yep, food can help alleviate stress. Here’s are some of our favorite examples:
Eat dark chocolate. That’s right, we just told you to eat chocolate. Dark chocolate contains a chemical called anandamide, a neurotransmitter produced in your brain that temporarily blocks feelings of pain and depression.
Dark chocolate also contains other chemicals that prolong the “feel-good” aspects of anandamide.
Purple berries, things like blueberries and blackberries, contain anthocyanins, which are antioxidants that aid your brain in the production of dopamine, a chemical that is critical to coordination, memory function, and your mood. It also gives purple berries their beautiful color.
And last but certainly not least, drink some coffee. Coffee seems to affect several neurotransmitters related to mood control, so drinking a cup in the morning could have a positive effect on your general sense of happiness.
According to this article, coffee triggers a mechanism in your brain that releases BDNF, which activates your brain stem cells to produce new neurons, thereby improving your brain health.
There you have it – ways chocolate, blueberries and coffee can improve your overall health!
