The olympics are here!
We talk a lot on this blog about how to live a healthier lifestyle and how to get into better physical shape. And right now, all over the news, are folks who are likely in the very best shape of their lives: the Olympians of the 2016 Summer games, which begin on Friday!
As if that wasn’t exciting enough, this week we’re bringing you some fun facts about the olympics to share with your friends as you enjoy the events.
For example, although these games have been around for more than 100 years, Rio de Janeiro is the first city in South America to host the Olympics.
Have you noticed the mascot for these games? He’s Vinicius, a bright-yellow catlike figure that also has elements of monkeys and birds. You can learn more about him here.
Organizers will prepare 60,000 meals per day to feed the athletes. Brazilian staples like rice and black beans and barbecued meat will be accompanied by other local offerings.
And finally, Rio’s taxi drivers, or “taxistas,” are being given the chance to sign up for free online English lessons provided by the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee. Drivers are often the first point of contact for fans, and those who take the four-month course will mostly likely be swapping “oi!” for “hi!”
